Physicians suggest that individuals be encouraged to develop their own methods of coping with fatigue, including pacing their daily lives, altering activity-rest patterns, taking frequent rest breaks, and delegating activities to others. Working out at the gym or jogging is a form of natural psychological and physical stimulation, but more moderate exercise such as walking can be helpful, too. People have found such meditative exercise forms as yoga, tai chi, or chi gong very restorative even when their physical capacity is limited by disease. Massage, therapeutic touch, acupuncture, and other alternative therapies that claim to restore the body's energy balance also may have a role to play, if only for their meditative aspects, which may relieve mental tension and depression. With eyes closed, one relaxes by envisioning a soothing image. For example, by visualizing walking down a shaded stairway, one might become more and more relaxed as he she descends into comforting darkness. once relaxed, an image is brought to mind that may represent a desired change. Some people simply see themselves as being completely healthy. others imagine the healing white blood cells as white knights charging forth, conquering the invading infections and visualizing the bad guys in full retreat. For those who may have trouble focusing clearly on an image, it is suggested to draw the desired image on paper to give it more substance and reality. 39 I equate nonconscious, unconscious, subconscious and preconscious processes as potentially capable of consciousness. That is, they utilize both classical processes and quantum superposition. However, there are clearly brain processes that are almost exclusively nonconscious and utilize classical processing. But in principle such processes could become conscious. For example, practitioners of certain types of yoga gain conscious control over normally nonconscious processes such as intestinal peristalsis.
Others find relaxation through different channels, such as yoga, tai chi, meditation, and biofeedback. Regular exercise (for example, jogging, working out at the gym, or swimming laps in a pool) is also an effective stress reliever. Whatever your source of relaxation, it must be something you enjoy doing, not a chore, so that you'll be able to stick with it for the long haul and reap the physical and mental health benefits.
There's no magical stress buster that works for everyone. You need to find activities and coping strategies that are effective for you. For some people, the answer is yoga or a nature walk for others, it might be listening to music or having a heart-to-heart conversation with a close friend. Exercise is a proven method of relieving stress. Aerobic exercise, such as running, brisk walking, bicycling, and swimming, is an excellent way of burning off stress and negative emotions. Resistance training (weight lifting) is an underappreciated form of exercise with excellent stress-relief effects. ,165
Nevertheless, the importance of physical therapy in obtaining lasting relief from PS cannot be overemphasized. Although some otherwise excellent injection studies report only 37 lasting relief (15), we have consistently found at least 79 of the patients to recover after injection and physical therapy. Self-reported peak experiences are correlated with hypnotic susceptibility and romantic love (Mathes, 1982). Additional research on altered states of consciousness in relationship to mental health might answer unresolved issues. College students, artists, and realtors, despite differences in age and in triggering events, report peak experiences in similar terms (Lanier et al., 1996 Yeagle, Privette, & Dunham, 1989)- Are these peak experiences simply doing something veiy well They are not. Subjects' descriptions of peak experiences are different from their descriptions of peak performances, in which they perform excellently (Privette & Bundrick, 1987). These attempts to quantify subjective experience are commendable, but it is not clear that Maslow's peak experiences exactly coincide with these or with descriptions based on interpersonal communication (Gordon, 1985) or on the experience of residents of a yoga ashram (Wilson & Spencer, 1990).
