Alternative medicine Approaches to medical diagnosis and therapy that have been developed outside the established standards, practices, and institutional sites of conventional medical science. Included are a great number of theories and systems, including therapeutic nutrition, chiropractic, homeopathy, structural, energetic therapies and mind-body therapies traditional non-Western ethnomedicinal system such as Chinese medicine and ayurveda, which combine botanical medicine with other applications other uses of botanical substances and various treatments that simply have not been accepted by the medical establishment. This is not to say that, were these methods subjected to scientific study, all of them would be found to be ineffective. Alternative medicine has been variously called natural, complementary (the preferred term in Europe), and numerous other terms referring to elements of a particular modality or tradition. Alternative medicine is not equivalent to holistic medicine, a...

Alternative treatment

Greater attention to alternative or traditional treatments, in addition to mainstream pharmaceutical industry drugs. Many physicians and researchers believe that as time passes and the limitations of Western medicine become more defined, it is increasingly important for there to be cooperation among different medical traditions.

One may argue that the lower death rate among SARS patients in China may have something to do with the characteristics of the virus itself or the gene of Chinese, in addition to the conventional wisdom that the Chinese statistics were not trustworthy.34 But according to Zhong Nanshan, one of the first physicians at the forefront of diagnosing and treating SARS patients, the low mortality rate among Chinese SARS patients could be attributed to two factors. First, China concentrated patients needed critical care in a few designated hospitals with well-trained doctors, better treatment facilities, and combined efforts of respiratory, intensive care, and infectious disease units. The hospital in Xiaotangshan, a suburb of Beijing, was set up and staffed in six days for that purpose. Second, Chinese doctors have adopted a comprehensive treatment protocol which included the appropriate use of corticosteroids and BiPAP, a non-invasive pressure ventilation method, and the combined therapy of...

Sho-saiko-to (SSKT) Sho-saiko-to (SSKT) is a central formula in traditional Chinese medicine and is readily available in many countries in Asia. While SSKT is a combination of seven ingredients in precise proportion, it is speculated that the most active component is scutellariae, from which baicalein is derived. Baicalein has been synthesized in a highly purified form and is being investigated at the National Cancer Institute. Studies of the effect of SSKT on lymphocytes from HIV-infected individuals have shown a greater inhibition of HIV REVERSE TRANSCRIPTASE and reductions in P24 ANTIGEN levels in HIV-seropositive asymptomatic people than in people with AIDS. To date, however, there exist insufficient data to support use of SSKT as an anti-HIV therapy.

Implications For Therapy Of

If depletion of protein chaperones and inhibition of proteasomes are significant in the pathogenesis of protein folding diseases, would upregulating these pathways be a reasonable therapeutic strategy On the protein chaperoning side, our studies indicate that coordinate upregulation of multiple HSPs, particularly those that work coordinately such as HSP70 and HSP40, is more likely to be beneficial than a single HSP (Batulan et al., unpublished results). Many drugs known to magnify the heat shock response mediated through the transcription factor HSF1 are not particularly effective in cultured motor neurons or are too toxic (12). However, recent studies show potential for hydroxy-lamine derivatives (48) and celastrol, a quinone methide triterpene and an active component from Chinese herbal medicine (128) as regulators of the heat shock response in an as needed manner. Other components of the UPS (e.g., ubiquitin E3 ligases) that can sequester mutant proteins until they can be degraded...

Appendix B Researching Alternative Medicine

People use CAM treatments and therapies in a variety of ways. Therapies are used alone (often referred to as alternative), in combination with other alternative therapies, or in addition to conventional treatment (sometimes referred to as complementary). Complementary and alternative medicine, or integrative medicine, includes a broad range of healing philosophies, approaches, and therapies. Some approaches are consistent with physiological principles of Western medicine, while others constitute healing systems with non-Western origins. While some therapies are far outside the realm of accepted Western medical theory and practice, others are becoming established in mainstream medicine. Diseases caused by toxins were among the earliest described. Reference to what we now know as cholera is outlined in early Chinese medicine. However, the first detailed accounts of disease that are available today are those of the Greeks, at the time that medicine really began. Diphtheria was described over 2,000 years ago, and the poet Virgil wrote an account of anthrax. Hippocrates (460-379 bc), who is often acclaimed as the 'father of medicine', outlined in detail the symptoms of tetanus1

Chinese herbs Herbs used routinely in therapy, including treatment of HIV, by practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine. Some commonly used natural herbal products astragalus mongholicus, Acanthopanax senticosus and Eleutheroccocus senticosus, Panax notoginseng, aconitum, Artemisiae annua, Tripterigium wilfordii, and Echinacea purpurea are clearly active immunologically, and can modulate, potentiate, or suppress immune response. It is important to note that the immunological effects may not be due to the purified versions or extracts of the herbs, but to their entire compositions, possibly including unknown and unrecognized substances. Many researchers and clinicians observe that Chinese medicine can hope to function in full partnership with Western medicine only if it heeds the most recent discoveries in immunology. To date, critical analyses of the use of Chinese herbs for HIV are lacking, and the jury is still out on the use of Chinese therapeutics for HIV. Chinese medicine The...

Mercury is still part of traditional Chinese medicine and two preparations, Antidotal Pills and Cinnabar Sedative Pills contain around 4 of mercury compounds. The former is given at the rate of four pills three times a day for poisonous insect stings, delivering a dose of 0.2 g of mercury, the latter at five pills three times a day as a calmative, delivering as much as a gram.
