Primary defects in extracellular matrix structural proteins

Molecular analysis of the osteochondrodysplasias has revealed a number of themes for the mechanisms and consequences of defects in extracellular matrix structural proteins. Rather than providing a cursory survey of each gene and disorder, several examples will be presented that illustrate the major themes and attempt to integrate what has been learned from the analysis of the distinct disorders into a coherent whole.
