cerebral volume, striking regional growth is detected throughout the callosum, with peak values occurring at the isthmus (the same area that was found to degenerate preferentially in our dementia studies (see Thompson et al., 1998b). This pronounced pattern of growth contrasts with the near-zero maps of change observed over a 2-week interval (Figure 5.6, lower panel).
Warping algorithms hold tremendous promise in representing, analyzing, and understanding the extremely complex dynamic processes that affect regional anatomy in the healthy and diseased brain. Only with a four-dimensional approach will patterns of callosal growth or degeneration be recorded in their full spatial and temporal complexity.
