illnesses and to enhance the functioning of the body's system. Though herbalism is not a licensed professional modality in the United States, herbs are "prescribed" by a range of practitioners, from holistic M.D.s to acupuncturists to naturopaths.

herbs A flowering plant whose stem above ground does not become woody and persistent. Today more and more facts are being reported in prestigious medical journals about their preventa-tive and healing benefits. The exact reasons for the positive effect herbs exert on the human body is not always known. It is evident, however, that the nutrient and nonnutrient chemicals stored within a plant's cellular structure are in forms that are easily metabolized by the gastric juices, enzymes, and hormones of the body. The therapeutic action of herbs comes from alkaloids, organic nitrogenous compounds that cause certain chemical reactions within the body. Herbs may also contain minerals, vitamins, and salts that help the body resist disease, strengthen tissues, and improve the nervous system.

Herbs can be prepared in a variety of ways, including decoction, fomentation, infusion, oil, ointment, poultice, syrup, and tincture. It is believed in order to receive the full beneficial effects that can be obtained from herbs, most must be consumed regularly for long periods of time. However, there are several exceptions like goldenseal, which if taken too long can retrogress the illness. Instructions on the labels should be followed. Additionally, because of vast differences amongst individual metabolisms, if an herb is not agreeable or if adverse effects are experienced, usage of the herb should be discontinued and a more agreeable herb substituted. Herbs can be potent, and moderation is generally recommended. Adverse side effects are possible with many herbs. Medicinal amounts of any herb should not be taken without first consulting a physician. Herbs can be obtained from health food stores, herbalists, homeopathic pharmacies, and some food markets. They should be kept in airtight containers away from heat, light, and dampness to prevent deterioration of their active ingredients.

The use of herbs is often suggested as a possible additional aid in keeping HIV dormant. Herbal remedies should not be used as the only treatment for HIV or AIDS.
