Change happens. Sometimes change seems to occur naturally and imperceptibly. Winter turns to summer so gradually that once we are sweltering in the August heat, we may have a difficult time remembering that we ever needed coats and gloves. Industry has provided several survival mechanisms, such as air conditioning and the thermostat, which allow us to ease into such transitions with minimal discomfort. We have learned about the predictability of seasonal change and have developed systematic ways to respond to it.
Change in business does not always happen that way. Change happens either because someone decides it needs to or because someone is forced to make changes in order for the business to prosper or survive in the current environment. At times, the change is unpredictable, and very often, it is perceptible and sudden. People must create their own mechanisms to adapt to the change, and these responses vary with the person and the situation. There is no universal antidote for the stark difference between today and yesterday or even for the gradual transformation between the two.
