Treatment is generally aimed at preventing future strokes, such as control of high blood pressure. A burst aneurysm or angioma may be surgically removed or obliterated.
subarachnoid space An area of the brain located between the arachnoid and the pia mater. The space has a spongy appearance and is filled with cerebrospinal fluid. The subarachnoid space is wider in the spinal cord than in the brain, especially in the lower part of the vertebral canal.
subdural hemorrhage A large blood clot (hematoma) that forms within the skull when blood seeps into the space between the dura mater, the tough outer layer of the meninges (covering of the brain) and the middle meningeal layer. The most common cause of this seeping blood is a torn vein on the inside of the dura mater resulting from a head injury. Subdural hemorrhages are most common among the elderly or alcoholics who have fallen.
