sedatives Drugs that relieve anxiety and tension, including barbiturates, administered at lower doses than those needed for sleep. They have been generally replaced by tranquilizers, which are less likely to cause dependence. (See also central nervous SYSTEM DEPRESSANTS.)
seizure A sudden burst of abnormal electrical activity from some area in the brain caused by one of a number of different conditions. While all seizures used to be called epilepsy, today the more modern term is seizure disorder. seizures that occur on a regular basis, however, are still termed epileptic.
