Single-dose ciprofloxacin is a safe and effective form of prophylaxis for meningococcal infection [66,81]. It has also been used effectively for transurethral surgical procedures, in oral prophylaxis of infection complicating biliary, and, in combination with parenteral metronidazole, for colorectal surgery, in which wound infection rates are comparable to standard prophylaxis [78]. Abdominal and gynecological surgical prophylaxis using trovafloxacin were rapidly becoming established at the time of its suspension [73]. Trials of newer agents are planned.
